Why isn't my electrician business showing up in AI Overviews?

You ask ChatGPT who to call for an emergency rewiring job, or search for an electrician near you, and two or three other electricians get named — not you. Here's what an AI Overview is actually doing differently, the four most common reasons an electrician gets left out, and how to check it yourself.

An AI Overview is not the old ten blue links

A classic Google results page lists ten or more links and lets you, the searcher, decide who to call. An AI Overview — and an answer from ChatGPT or Gemini — does something different: it reads across the web and then names two or three specific businesses as its answer, with no list of alternatives to scroll past. If your electrical business isn't one of those two or three names, you don't show up lower down the page. You don't show up at all.

That's a real change for an electrician who depends on "near me" searches and emergency callouts. It also means the old advice — rank on page one, get clicks — doesn't map cleanly onto this. The question is no longer "where do I rank", it's "am I one of the two or three names the assistant actually says out loud".

The four most common reasons an electrician is absent

None of these are confirmed as "the" ranking factor — nobody outside Google publishes the actual mechanism. These are the four patterns we see most often when an electrician is missing and a nearby competitor isn't.

Check it yourself: electrician-specific prompts

Open a fresh or private session and try your actual town in place of <town>:

  1. best electrician near <town> for a fuse box
  2. who should I call for an emergency rewiring job in <town>
  3. emergency electrician callout <town> tonight

Notice the difference in phrasing: a fuse box issue is routine, a rewiring job is more involved but not always urgent, and a callout at night is a different situation again. These often return a different shortlist of businesses from each other — an electrician who shows up for "best electrician near me" during the day may not be named at all for "emergency callout tonight", and vice versa. If you only ever test one phrasing, you're only seeing one slice of how your business shows up.

This is observed behaviour, not a documented ranking system

To be plain about what we actually know: nobody outside Google, OpenAI or Google's Gemini team has published how these assistants decide which two or three businesses to name. What we and you can do is run the same prompts repeatedly and watch what comes back. AI answers vary between runs — the same question, typed again an hour later, can return a different list of electricians. They also change over time as the underlying listings and reviews change. A single run, good or bad, is one data point, not a verdict. Three separate sessions at different times of day is the minimum before a pattern means anything.

If you'd rather not run this by hand

Rick runs the same electrician-specific prompts for your trade and town, in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, across at least three separate sessions at different times. You get a short PDF: which electricians were named instead of you, how your listings and reviews compare to theirs, and the three to five changes most likely to help.
